No pretenders
In the last year there has spawned more rehashed, re-labelled ‘new but not really improved’ versions of the BBS Bafang units that we’ve lost count. The truth is that Bafang are an assembly plant (just like every other electric bike motor manufacturer) and it is with the deepest sincerity that we would like to point out they don’t reserve the ‘special’ components for small resellers buying 100 units at a time. Instead, Bafang works with the larger purchasers to improve the models over time based on feedback from a large number of customers, from both the conversion kit market and the OEM electric bike market. If you buy a Bafang branded unit from a reputable company, you are buying the most up to date, latest spec unit available.
More torque than any other
Whilst there are higher-powered hub drive units available, nothing beats the hill climbing, wheelie-popping direct power of the mid drive. To tame the torque this kit requires the patented ‘Gear Sensor’ from Agentura REPRO (Czech Republic) by default. With other BBS units this is optional however because of the high torque of the BBS-HD, this is mandatory otherwise your transmission will be toast after 1 ride. The Gear Sensor system is easy to install and momentarily inhibits the power from the motor for just long enough to gear shift. You will need to select from 2 options (derailleur or internally geared hub) when purchasing.
Heavy Duty
The BBS-HD was originally going to be just a revision of the BBS02 with 12 ‘FET’ at only 25A. Going from 9 MOSFET (Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) to 12 MOSFET increased the duty capability of the unit more than expected. The downside was that the BBS02 unit (which was originally and remodel of the BBS01) uses an integrated controller which could not fit any additional FETs. That meant that Bafang and their controller supplier had to completely remodel the diecast casing to make more room and to dissipate additional heat. The result is a slightly larger unit capable of housing the new controller. Other components were also upgraded (stator, rotor, gear box). The new BBS-HD is what many enthusiasts wanted the BBS02 to be.
High drain battery options
We’ve customised 2 battery options for the BBS-HD. Both are from Samsung. The first battery is a high energy cell (Samsung 29E NCA 2,900mAh) that is nominal 48V and 11.6Ah (557Wh). This battery will take the drain of 30A without breaking a sweat and will power you over a decent range, depending on use of course. The second battery option is a high power cell (Samsung 25R NCA 2,500mAh) that is nominal 48V and 10Ah (480Wh). This battery is capable of continuous draws of up to 80A (20A per cell at 4P) making it one of the highest power options in this size, and an excellent option to power your BBS-HD kit if you’re going to be ‘hanging it out there’ regularly.

I have been a cyclist for many years but was diagnosed with heart disease a few months ago. I turned my thoughts to eBikes and decided to buy this one. It is the second best thing I have spent money on after laser eye surgery. I had previously ridden a Bosch powered Trek eBike which was very good and sufficiently powered with 500W but it was a bit noisy. This Bafang unit is silent and twice as powerful, plus the major upside is that it is fully programmable via free software and a £30 cable. I didn’t get on with the factory software provided by Dillenger. One particular flaw was the amount of time the motor would continue to provide power after I stopped pedaling – this was set too high by Dillenger and it was throwing me wide on corners. I turned this down via the software and it is much better. You definitely need to modify the standard settings if you want to get the most out of this motor. Any down sides? A few small things. Firstly, the controller doesn’t know how hard you are pedaling – if you pedal harder, it doesn’t give you more power. This takes some getting used to as it is quite different to cycling without a motor. Secondly, the teeth where the battery meet the holder are knife sharp, and I managed to cut one of my fingers before I realised how sharp they were. Thirdly, the unit that Dillenger sent me was missing eBrakes and didn’t have the connection for the gear change cut-off, so I suspect that version control is not great at the Bafang factory or at Dillenger (Customer Service at Dillenger has been very good though). Other than these small quibbles, I am completely and utterly in love with this system. It makes me so happy to be back on 2 wheels (Posted on 31/10/2017)Functions as Described Price Overall Rating - Great engine, plenty of powerReview by Mathew

Ive been looking at the mid drive engines for about 3 years now and decided to finally bite the bullet and purchase one. After hours of "youtube" I decided on the BBSHD. Very very happy with it. Being a completely non technical person I got my local bike store to install the motor. They did this with ease. I also bought the lekkie bling ring, firstly in 42T then changed to 36T. As the chain ring that comes with it is utter rubbish for my needs. I live in very hilly country and commute 55kms a day round trip. On PAS level 3-5 I get to work easily with juice still in the battery, it literally eats up the hills. I've even went to PAS 9 which is crazy fast for half my trip as well as throttle assist.....still power left in the battery. I charge the battery when I get to work for the return trip, I have not tried the whole trip on one charge yet, but I think it would make it. I also purchased the 48v 14amp battery, glad I did. What was tricky to work out was the gear sensor "absolutely vital", but..........the motor does not have an "out" plug for this to plug into on the read derailleur, so it had to be mounted on the handle bars which works fine, at the sacrifice of one e-brake sensor. After this I purchased a Y splitter so that both the e-brake and gear sensor can plug in. I also mounted it on my 2017 model focus black forest lite 29er......it seriously brings mountain biking alive again! Im 40 and feel 12 years old again with the motor! I have been able to replace my ute with this bike and have saved massive amounts of fuel!Price Overall Rating Functions as Described
The customer service has been amazing as I got my BBSHD through the Melbourne distributor at E-Bikery. Very fast and great customer service and no question is too much. I would like to upgrade to a 52volt battery at some stage but no hurry. I use the bike for commuting and also blue grade mountain bike single tracks........no issues what so ever! It was also simple to get the right size bottom bracket for the right size motor, mine was 68mm and that's exactly what came. I recommend upgrading the chain as well to a heavy duty one, as PAS 9 puts massive amounts of torque on it, also the gear sensor, without these two I'm sure my chain would brake. I now just waiting for the "Switcheroonie" to come back into stock so I can play with the controller settings to see what happens with power and battery consumption etc! All in all very happy (Posted on 9/07/2017) - This is a premium kit very happy with my purchase.Review by Andrew

Will peddle at 25kms per hour with ease up hill etc. and under accelerator will go faster. has ample power, quite gruff on start off (torgue) from 5kmph very smooth. Used for commuting I have done over 300km on it and will get a weeks use at 6kms each way. Exchanged the sensors for levers would recommend that approach if nothing else looks more professional. gear select cable on my decades old bike was too thick for change sensor modern cable fits a breeze gear and brake sensors work well and necessary. Chose this kit for bike balance and glad I did would buy another if I could get the wife to ride a bike to (Posted on 19/07/2016)Functions as Described Price Overall Rating - Outstanding productReview by Christopher

I bought this kit and installed it on a Scott mountain bike. I live 12.8 miles from work and I use this bike to commute. I'm not in the best of shape and I've averaged 24 mph on my commute. the power in this kit is awesome.. The shop that installed this kit was very impressed with the amount of power it had. I live in Fort Collins, Colorado and there are tons of bike trails, so it is lots of fun to use even when not commuting.. This has been a great purchase and I feel that value for this product is the best that is available anywhere. Dillinger is a great company, so happy with my purchasePrice Overall Rating Functions as Described
