Here at Dillenger we like to get a little carried away sometimes and supercharge some e-bikes just for fun. We’ve added a 500W system from a Dillenger Premium kit to create a 35km/h high powered SS8. This is only to be sold in AU and only in very small numbers so if you like what you see, drop us a line and we can put one aside for you. We’ve also done this with the Apache model in the past and it was a hit so when we saw how sleek the SS8 turned out, we couldn’t help ourselves. This is a Dillenger modified SS8 and is no longer street legal. That means you can only use this electric bike on private property.

Electric bikes are fun, because they’re electric. That relationship is linear in our experience – as power increases, so does the fun! We would say that 500W is twice the fun of 250W any day of the week. The SS8 lends itself perfectly for this limited edition upgrade, thanks to the size of the upgraded battery pack which is more than capable of the current draw required to run the 500W system at full amps. A smaller battery would not last the distance and if stressed over the lifetime, will reduce significantly in capacity. The 36V 14Ah Samsung battery is enough to run this system reliably over time, and with enough range so you can get to wherever you need to, on your own private property…

500W Premium heritage

The latest edition of the Dillenger rear wheel Premium Conversion Kit is a hit. It evolved from the older 1,000W direct drive hub motor conversion kit. This was a great deal of fun and served the company well for a number of years however the 500W geared hubs were always nipping at the heels of the 1,000W direct drive hubs. In terms of top speed, the direct drive hubs will always have an advantage. However when you get to know both systems, the 500W geared hub provided such joyous acceleration that top speed takes a back seat. One impediment with the first 500W system was that the Bafang 500W BPM hub lacked the reliability as we saw with the Dominos fleet. Dillenger’s very own OEM version of the 500W geared hub borrowed a lot of design features from our widely adopted 250W front hub motor. After strenuous testing we chose to change our off road conversion kit to adopt this geared hub and it’s also a winner for the SS8 limited edition.

Off road only

The caveat on the purchase of these 500W converted SS8’s is that they are for ‘off road use only’ which means you’re not legally allowed to use these on public roads or footpaths. The visual difference between the two types of hubs is not overtly obvious. It would also appear that the stencilling machine that applies the wattages on the hub itself wasn’t working the day these ran through the motor plant.

Understated performance

One of the benefits between the old 1,000W direct drive hubs and the new 500W geared hubs (running at essentially the same amps) that we don’t discuss much is the improvement in appearance. The size of the 500W geared hub is very similar to the 250W hub. Added to this benefit also is that the limited edition SS8 500W hub motor is in the rear wheel and is further disguised within the gear cluster. The style of the bike and the understated appearance is sure to confuse onlookers as you buzz by them at 35 – 40km/h!
